The Art of Now: A Yoga and Poetry Sensory Workshop with Ash

  • Creative Art Workshop 80 Audubon St. New Haven, CT, 06510 United States (map)

As a way to support our recent 300hr YTT graduates, we will be showcasing their events in the community. Please note this event is NOT held at Breathing Room Yoga Center.

Creative writing, like a dedicated yoga practice, draws from the full range of ways we perceive the world. Yogic philosophy outlines five “koshas,” or layers of awareness, from the body and physical environment to connection to bliss and the divine. This holistic practice develops our ability to witness our experiences and sensations so we can find beauty and inspiration from what, without the practice, can seem mundane.

By offering tools that feel simple, accessible, and sustainable, this 2-hour poetry workshop will help students create space for artistic expression by drawing on mindfulness practices and yoga postures that open channels for creative energy. Beginning with a short meditation and gentle movement to support participants in arriving in the present moment, the group will then be invited to respond to one of several writing prompts.

Please bring a notebook for writing, pen or pencil, yoga mat, and water bottle.

ABOUT THE TEACHER

At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ash was managing communications for a yoga studio in San Francisco and producing videos about their teachers. One of the teachers said, “I never feel worse after teaching a yoga class,” and Ash thought, “Now that’s the kind of career I want.” Three years later, after a winding path where yoga helped heal injuries and illnesses, Ash completed her 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) training at Sanapurna Yoga and Ayurveda in Zurich, Switzerland, with teacher Poonam Stecher Sharma. Currently in Breathing Room’s 300-hour Yoga Teacher Training, Ash has studied various styles of yoga, the philosophy of yoga, and taken specialized workshops in ayurveda, trauma-informed yoga, and yoga therapy. In individual sessions, she focuses on mobility and embodiment. Playfulness and joy are core tenets of her teaching. Beyond yoga, Ash has been long-distance road cycling since 2018 and completed numerous centuries (100-mile rides). She believes that yoga is essential to balance strenuous activity and for increasing mobility, flexibility, and strength. Her dog Lulu, who loves unconditionally, is one of her greatest teachers.
