Dear you,
Yes you. You who have been navigating this crazy world. Who has been carrying on amidst the insanity that is consistently unfolding around you at every turn while you continue to try and live in service to your life as best you know how. You who have to unconsciously check your values every time you hear the news or read the updates. You who recognize that the subconscious is speaking louder and louder and is not wanting to live on the sub level any longer.
I see you. Hi. How you holdin up?
There is a questionI have been asking myself over the last week., “what is it you are truly in service of?”
Each one of us is indeed in service of something, and in many cases, many things. Think on it.
Upon my first reflection I am in service of yoga, truth teaching, of community, of family, of friendship. Many things I have devoted my life, my time and my attention to.
However, I have begun to think about this more deeply and have come to realize that what we devote our time, energy and attention to is inevitably what we end up being in service of. And if we are not careful that service can shift, often unintentionally depending on where our attention is constantly given.
If where we put our attention is what we end up in service of, our attention has potential to, over time, become in service of the anthesis of the things we think we are serving. Hear me out– we feel we are in service to our family, our friends, the hobbies we enjoy and yet how much time do we give our attention to our phones, the news, the dramas of the world? And then keep our attention there. We stray away from what is in front of us, what truly feeds our souls and swap it for what is being projected at us, sold to us; fear, separation, helplessness.
More and more culture, society, and ego begin to push us to do more, buy more, create more, keep up with… than what truly serves our hearts, our souls. And so we commit to following those external forces often unknowingly switching our passions from service of self and others for the illusion of fear, constant grind for more…for suffering.
So when I asked myself this question: “What are you truly in service of” I was met with a rude awakening. A realization that I have been in service of my own suffering. Putting my attention to the fear of the country/world, the complications of adulting, business owing, parenting. Fears that are inevitably fueled by external pressures and projections. Don’t get me wrong, clearly I need to be a functioning member of society however, I’m seeing how much society is contributing to the opposite of what I truly need to be a beneficial presence in the world.
I am coming to see more and more the intention of our culture and society as it stands is to strike fear, confusion and separation into the people so we will look outside of ourselves for the answers. So we will not trust in our basic fundamental foundations of love, compassion and connection. If we do not believe in the truth within ourselves to be whole we can be sold anything- products, ideologies, discontent– suffering. And the more we suffer the more we will look outside ourselves for the answers. It's a brutal cycle.
And here we are, the suffering has begun to overtake the original purpose of service of love and connection.
Here’s the truth: I don’t want to be in service of my suffering. Do you?
I want to be in service of the teachings, compassion and most of all love. Love and compassion for myself and everyone else trying to exist in the wildness of the world.
So I am choosing not to suffer as my act of resistance. I am choosing self love, compassion, connection as my act of standing up against all that this moment in history is throwing at us. I am choosing to not give in to the fear, the “not enough-ness”, the seperation. I am choosing to refocus my devotions and connection to love. There are many ways to stand up to truth and I firmly believe that self love, compassion and service of love is one of the strongest ways to do it.
So I invite you to ask these questions. To be truthful with yourself about what you are currently in service of and see where you can redirect your attention back to what helps you stand tall in your truth and love of self.
When we stand in truth we stand in resistance to fear. When we stand together we change the narrative of what we allow to control our attention. When we stand in the intention of love we can change the world.
