I spent a beautiful weekend celebrating the life of a truly special individual. The woman who has been my fathers partner for almost the last 20 years and who was also his childhood best friend and highschool sweetheart.
Amidst the humid Philadelphia suburbs and cheesesteaks, stories were shared, childhood streets we drove and age old friendships were reunited and honored.
Throughout the weekend I was able to step back and observe generations of love and connection. And even though being struck with many existential thoughts and realization one thing stood out to me the most. The importance of being together.
Family, friends, loved ones –being together in celebration, grief, laughter, tears, memories, plans– It is what keeps human connection alive. The coding of our intrinsically woven interior self develops from our exterior relationships and experiences.
Being with my dads childhood friends reminded me of the relationships I have built over the years and how they have helped me become who I am. Being with them as an adult, enjoying their company and a good manhattan reminded me that we are a combination of all the people we have loved and been in relationship with, and that these people are the foundation of who my father is and therefore who I am as well.
WIth all this being said my mantra this month is to remember how important it is to be together with the people who light you up and help you feel and be in all that is being human.
As we head into the completion of the summer session I encourage you to be together with those people for you.
I am so grateful to be able to take some time off to be with my family and childhood friends, their kiddos and mine where we can celebrate each other, the challenges, beauties, losses and unfolding of our lives- together.
